Wellington Shire has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with galleries and theatres catering for all tastes. From the historic Regent Theatre in Yarram to the Courthouse Gallery/Theatre in Stratford and the tiny but very active Big Gallery in Briagolong a drive around the Shire will reveal a wealth of hidden treasures. Great coffee and a marvelous contemporary art experience a visit to the Cowwarr Art Space is a must, this Heritage listed former butter factory is the home and studio of the sculptor and identity Clive Murray-White and his Australian Marble studio. The Art Space also host three residential studio’s for international and Australian artists in a range of practices from painting, performance to new media.
For lovers of the natural environment, Gippsland’s speciality, the Stubbs Fine Art Gallery on the Princess’s Hwy in Munro reveals wildlife art at its best with renowned painter Dawn Stubbs prints and paintings available alongside the fascinating glass art of Crystal Stubbs and the impressively accurate sculptures of Chris Stubbs. The major centre of Sale hosts the Gippsland Art Gallery one of 14 regional galleries across the state. This Gallery hosts over 30 exhibitions a year ranging from international art, national touring exhibitions to the most challenging and sometimes controversial contemporary art programs. The Gallery caters for everyone with education programs and guided tours of the exhibitions and behind the scenes looks at the collection. Next door to the Gallery is the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre locally known as the Wedge. A major venue on the performing arts circuit, a night out should begin with dinner at the Bis Cucina restaurant followed by a theatre production by a national touring company, a hilarious night of ‘stand up’ from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival or a heart pounding dance performance by the likes of Bangarra Dance Theatre. Festivals and events pop up all over the Shire, some are regular like the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and others visit from time to time like the Mountain Cattleman’s Cup. The Gippsland Vehicle Collection attracts automotive collectors from all over the country for rallies and highly polished exhibit days, whilst our regions military history from the days of the Light Horse to more recent conflicts are on display at the Gippsland Armed Forces Museum at Fulham. The Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum at Port Albert has a nationally recognsed collection of maritime artifacts and records from Gippsland’s early history. Wellington Shire is home to a rich and diverse range of Arts and Cultural Experiences to suit all tastes.

Performing Arts

Sale itself is home to the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre – A venue long in name but not short on Entertainment. This modern 400 seat Theatre presents a diverse range of Australia’s finest professional Performing Arts each year including Drama, Music, Dance and Comedy; and regularly hosts high Profile Musicians, Actors and Comedians on their National Tours. Twenty minutes north of Sale, the town of Stratford on the River Avon is home to the Courthouse Theatre & Gallery. This newly renovated 100 seat facility boasts regular Professional and Community Productions and Arthouse Film Screenings. Stratford is also home to the annual Stratford Shakespeare Festival; a colourful festival in the first weekend in May which celebrates the village name of Stratford and its links to William Shakespeare. Forty minutes south, the town of Yarram is home to the historic Regent Theatre. Originally constructed in 1929, this historic local landmark underwent significant refurbishment in the late 1990’s and today can accommodate up to 1,000 patrons for concerts, live music, dance and Theatrical events. In addition to live performances, Regular film screenings continue to entertain visitors to this iconic Picture Palace more than 80 years after it opened it’s doors. For those who harbor fantasies of treading the boards, Wellington Shire is home to a number of Community Performing Arts Groups, including Sale Theatre Company, Maffra Dramatic Society, Groundwork Youth Theatre, Gippsland Regional Arts Sale and The Stratford on Avon Shakespeare Association; as well as many talented local dance schools.
